Delbert O. Horman

Delbert Orville Horman, 71, of Chaffee, Missouri, struck out on September 6, 2026, after what was presumed to be his third heart attack. In true fashion he was volunteering his time to the City of Chaffee mowing the lawn at the Chaffee Historical Society.

Delbert was born on May 20, 1955, to George and Bonnie (Naugle) Horman in Great Bend, Kansas. He came into this world alongside his twin brother Delmar.

Delbert married Susan Elfrank on February 19, 1983. He favored her so much he married her again on April 2, 1992. They remain married despite residing in separate residences because everyone knows Delbert is difficult to live with due to tendencies like loudly slamming the coffee pot at 5am. Born to their union was two children, Jessica who inherited his wit and sarcasm and Dallon who inherited his high cholesterol and the belief that he is always right.

Delbert is survived by his wife Susan of Scott City, his daughter Jessica (William) Sammut of Clermont, Florida and his son Dallon (happily divorced) of New York, Virginia, Chaffee, and Clermont. He is quite the vagabond. He is survived 5 grandchildren Adam Sammut of Jackson, Leah McNeely of Clermont, Bentely Dees and Conaire Horman of Cape Girardeau and Diesel Horman of Chaffee who is the favorite grandchild just like his dad was the favorite child. He is also survived 4 siblings; Dewey Horman of Tom Bean, Texas, Delmar Horman of Cape Girardeau, Ellen Piper of Chaffee, and Dennis Horman of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Christine and his brother Jerry Horman. We all know that him and Jerry have already began arguing and gossiping about the inner workings of the town of Chaffee. He is also preceded by a granddaughter, Eve McNeely.

Okay now that we have wrapped up family it is time to discuss Delbert’s true passions Chaffee and baseball. Growing up in Chaffee, Delbert was active in track and would share tales of feats such as jumping barrels at the skating rink. Dalbert was a 1973 graduate of Chaffee High School. He enjoyed his time working for the Scott County Sheriff Department. Jessica recalls as a child spending time at Benton where they would visit with Sheriff Bill Ferell and Jim Chambers. He later worked for the Chaffee Parks Department. He ultimately finished his career working for Purcell Tire Company. He began in Cape Girardeau before transferring to Lebanon and finally Osage Beach where he retired. He was very active in the Chaffee Jaycees, Chaffee Youth League, Babe Ruth League, and Cal Ripken Baseball. In 2017 he was inducted into the Missouri Babe Ruth State Hall of Fame, an honor for which he was very proud to receive after all his years of dedication. Following in his parents’ footsteps he was active in the Country C.B.er’s Club. He was instrumental in the light’s installation for Harmon Field. Upon retiring he moved back to Chaffee. He spent his days in retirement helping with local youth sports, local organizations like the Historical Society, and helping to plan community events like the Harmon Field Centennial.

His biggest joy in retirement was the time he spent with family. He was always available to help care for his grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to spend time with them. He continued our family traditions of spending holidays and time together. Despite living alone until last year his house was always full, cookies or brownies were always baked, and card game was always ready to be played.
