Donald Ray McElmurry was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on March 3, 1937 and passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025 at his home. Don married the love of his life, Carole Adel Wadlington, on November 3, 1957. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Don was preceded in death by his wife Carole, his parents, Cecil A. and Hester (Ross) McElmurry and his son-in-law, Steve Millington, sister-in-law JoAnn Strong and brother-in-law Nick Liest. He is survived by his daughters Julie Millington, Karen Slinkard (Richard Springs), grandchildren Craig (Melissa) Millington, Jennifer (Ryan) Elder, and great-grandchildren Rylie and Hayes Millington and Jackson and Hudson Elder, sister Judy Liest, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Don was a man who lived life with energy, humor, and heart. He never walked into a room without brightening it—whether with one of his classic stories, a perfectly timed joke, or the sound of his infectious laughter. He had a true gift for making people feel like they belonged, a natural relationship builder with an easy smile and a knack for turning strangers into friends.
As a young man, he had a passion for dancing and was known for his smooth moves on the floor, especially the jitterbug. He carried a love for jazz and big-band music throughout his life.
Don dedicated over 30 years to pharmaceutical sales and over 10 years to selling homes with Century 21. He took great pride in helping families find that special place to call their own.
Some of his favorite moments were found outdoors with a fishing pole in hand. Whether it was bass, crappie, or bluegill, he found peace and purpose at the water’s edge. Many of those memories were shared with his longtime fishing buddy, Kenny Johnson, whose friendship meant the world to him.
Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family. Whatever the activity - playing cards, playing with his grandkids, shooting fireworks, watching Cardinals baseball - those were the moments where love was loudest, laughter was longest, and bonds were strongest. Family meant everything to him. Playing cards together brought out his best jokes and his biggest smiles. And few moments captured his spirit better than when he decided to teach his grandkids how to play baseball—in the middle of the living room. With a foam bat in hand and a twinkle in his eye, he told them, “If you're gonna be at bat, you have to spit.” And so they did—right on the living room carpet. That memory remains one of the most beloved stories in family lore.
Relationships were the fabric of his later years. Wednesday mornings were a must—reserved for coffee and conversation with his buddies. Friday evenings were for dinners filled with laughter with special friends. Sundays were dedicated to worship and community at church.
Don leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and faithful living. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be on Monday, May 5, 2025 from 5-8 pm and funeral services will be at 10 am on Tuesday, May 6th at Amick Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City, Missouri, with graveside service following at Lightner’s Cemetery.
