Eugene J Hindman, son of the late Eugene Hindman and Geneva (Eldridge) Hindman was born on September 6, 1939 in Chaffee, Missouri. Eugene departed this life on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 peacefully at his home in Cape Girardeau, Missouri at the age of 86 years.
Mr. Hindman graduated from Chaffee High School in May of 1958. After having worked for his family’s logging business, Eugene was hired in 1960 to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department. He would spend the next 32 years there, climbing from the rank of probationary firefighter to Fire Chief. Eugene retired from his duties as Chief in September of 1992. After retirement, he stayed active crappie fishing and camping with family and his grandchildren. He also enjoyed being in his workshop, building crafts and repairing anything that was needed.
On May 14, 1960, he married the catch of his life, Donna Jo Cotner. They moved to Cape Girardeau on November 29, 1960. The couple welcomed a son in July 1961, and a daughter in September of 1963. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage together.
Along with his wife, survivors include one son, Greg (Renee) Hindman of Patton, Missouri; one daughter, Michelle Hindman-Rushing (Tim Graham) of Paragould, Arkansas. Eugene would state that he held many titles in his life, but the best one was grandpa to his four grandsons, Brandon (Stephanie) Hindman of Cape Girardeau, Matthew (Casi) Rushing of Paragould, Lukas Eugene (Jordan) Rushing of Paragould, and Nicholas (Kaylee) Hindman of Patton; four great-grandsons, Weston Rushing, Jackson Eugene Rushing, Crue and Owen Eugene Hindman; one great grand-daughter, Rayce Delre; two brothers, Frank Hindman of Springfield and Bruce (Sue) Hindman of Wappapello, Missouri.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Glen Ray Hindman.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 1:30 PM until 3:00 PM at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. Funeral service will then be conducted at 3:00 PM with Rodney Eldridge officiating. Interment will follow in the Union Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, family would like donations to be sent to the Cape Girardeau Fireman Fund, Humane Society, or Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
