Larry Mohney

Larry Willard Mohney, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, departed this life on September 4, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. Larry was born August 28, 1941, in Climax, MI to Willard Sr. and Elizabeth (Kiewiet) Mohney. As one of eleven children, Larry spent his early years growing up and working on the family farm, which helped shape him into the person we all knew and loved. The tallest of 7 brothers, he was looked up to in stature, as much as he was for his strong work ethic and kind heart.

Larry attended Vicksburg Public Schools where he graduated from in 1959. During his school years, he was actively involved in FFA where he worked hard supporting the club by planting and selling Christmas Trees.

It was during his years at Vicksburg High School that Larry met the love of his life, Phyllis June Martens. The high school sweethearts wed on August 26, 1961, in Fulton, MI. Together they welcomed two sons, Gene and Christopher, and spent 64 wonderful years building a life together.

During his professional career, Larry worked at the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo for many years working with various livestock. In 1982, while their eldest son Gene was in the Navy, Larry, Phyllis and Chris relocated to southeast Missouri. After relocation, Larry continued his career in many facets. He worked at Monsanto, began selling insurance through Met Life where he covered 20 counties in southeast Missouri. He then found himself back in the agriculture business while selling advertising for the Mid America Farmer Grower where he traveled and sold throughout the entire state of Missouri and northern Arkansas. From there, he began his time with The Furst-McNess Company, allowing he and Phyllis many wonderful opportunities to travel. He was also a member of the Missouri and Arkansas Cattlemen’s Associations during this time. Later in his career, he went on to work at WM Nobbe selling John Deere farm equipment and then went into car sales at First Auto Credit in Jackson, MO, where he retired from. Larry and Phyllis also went on to own and operate P&L Home Inspections where they were active members of the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce.

Larry was deeply devoted to his family, and after raising two sons, he was blessed with three granddaughters who gave him the “girl dad” experience he’d never had. He took great pleasure in creating a home on the farm in “beautiful downtown Frohna, MO”, where he and Phyllis spent 36 years making it a place where family could gather and their grandchildren could spend their summers. Together they raised beef cattle, sheep, rabbits, hogs, and let us not forget – his beloved mules. Though age and declining health had slowed him down in more recent years, Larry still took tremendous pride in the place he called home.

Larry leaves behind his loving wife of 64 wonderful years, Phyllis (Martens) Mohney, two sons: Gene (Loretta) Mohney of Whitehall, MI and Christopher (Michelle) Mohney of Scott City, MO, three granddaughters: Laticia (Lance) Lauer of Climax, MI, Tara Mohney of Montague, MI, Alyssa Mohney of St. Louis Missouri, and four great-grandchildren whom he adored: Bradley Dahl, Hannah Lauer, Charles Eilers & Maggie Eilers, all of Michigan. Larry is also survived by siblings Patricia (Stan) Makowski of Vicksburg, Mary Soule of Baldwin, MI, Willard (Bill) Jr. (Linda) of Vicksburg, MI, and Brenda (Clyde) Wayne of Schoolcraft.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Sr. and Elizabeth, sister Ellen Bates, and brothers Mark, Joe, Dennis, Dan and John.

Larry’s family will receive friends and family for visitation on Friday, September 19th from 10am -12pm at the Cape Bible Chapel located at 2911 Kage Rd., in Cape Girardeau, MO. A celebration of life will immediately follow visitation at 12:00pm.
